Frequently asked questions

Who registers apprenticeship programs in Kentucky?

State Apprenticeship Agency (recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor to register programs). Official office: Office of Industry and Apprenticeship Services (Kentucky Education and Labor Cabinet).

What is a registered apprenticeship?

A paid job with structured on-the-job training and classroom instruction, registered with the U.S. Department of Labor or a State Apprenticeship Agency. When you finish, you get a nationally recognized credential.

Do apprentices get paid?

Yes. Apprentices earn wages from day one, usually with raises as they gain skills, and tuition for the classroom part is often covered by the sponsor.

Who registers apprenticeship programs in my state?

Either the federal Office of Apprenticeship (OA) or a State Apprenticeship Agency (SAA) recognized by the Department of Labor. Each state page on this site says which one, based on Apprenticeship.gov.

How do I find an apprenticeship near me?

Use the Apprenticeship.gov Apprenticeship Finder (each state page links to it with your state preselected), check your state agency's program list, and contact union training centers (JATCs) for electrical, plumbing/pipefitting, carpentry and ironworking directly. Many take applications only during set windows.

Can I use scholarships or Pell during an apprenticeship?

Sometimes. Some trade scholarships, like PHCC, IEC and NAWIC, accept apprentices. WIOA training funds can also help with pre-apprenticeship and related costs. See trade school scholarships and paying for trade school.
